21 DAY CHALLENGE - Day 5
Day 5 – Ooops!
One of the greatest struggles people face when growing in their faith is the issue of being good enough, or rather, trying not to mess up…too bad. There’s this overwhelming sense that if we mess us, somehow the forgiveness that we initially experienced becomes null and void.
One of the greatest truths about the Christian faith is that God wants to set you free from sin. Yep! Read that again. God wants to set YOU free from sin. ALL of it! In fact, the book of Romans describes sin as a form of captivity and slavery, and that’s exactly how it can and usually does feel. We become captives, bound by sin. So hearing that God wants to set us free from sin is HUGE!
Does that mean you’ll never sin again? That would be great wouldn’t it? The reality is that we are carnal and totally depraved. We were born sinners; it’s innate in us. So, yeah, we’ll likely mess up again. Don’t give up. Keep reading. There’s hope!
In the story we read today, Jesus heals a lame man. He just told him “pick up your mat and walk”, and the guy, sick for 38 years, did! Are you kidding me? How cool would that have been to see? Jesus found the same guy later at the temple and said some startling words to him; “Stop sinning or something even worse may happen to you.” SCREEEECH! What? Back that bus up… Hold the phone! Come again? At least that’s how I feel when I read that. That’s seriously intimidating when you first look at.
So what is Jesus saying here?
First, I think Jesus is saying, “In the same way I helped you overcome your legs that didn’t work, I can help you overcome sin that controls your actions.” YOU CAN LIVE IN VICTORY!
Second, I think Jesus said this because He knew if and when that man did sin (when you and I will mess up again), he’d remember those words, and when that man remembered those words, he would remember that Jesus made his legs work, and when he remembered that Jesus made his legs work, he’d remember this: “If Jesus can make me walk he can make me clean again!”
What do you do if you’ve messed up? What do you do if you’ve sinned? 1 John 1:9 says, “If you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive them and purify you from ALL unrighteousness”.
If Jesus can make a lame man walk, he can make you clean again. Just ask!
As you read through John 5, ask yourself these questions…
1. What, in my life, needs to be forgiven? 2. What steps can I take to ensure that these sins don’t keep coming up? 3. Who can I ask to help hold me accountable and share the load with me? 4. What questions do I have?
Jesus, I pray that you would forgive me of anything that has crept back into my life. I want to live for you EVERY day! Help me to see those sins as they are lurking around so I can avoid them. Jesus please make me and keep me clean! Amen.
